The Potato Cafe

Mr. Mallinson's class planted some seed potatoes way back in March. Our class was lucky enough to observe the life cycle of their potatoes over the last four months. Yesterday, the potatoes were harvested and you wouldn't believe how many potatoes they dug out of the ground.

 

Today, a few students from Mrs. Singh's class helped out Mr. Mallinson's class by cleaning the potatoes and boiling them in the school's kitchen. After recess, we transformed the library into "The Potato Café" and enjoyed all our hard work and effort.

 

Prior to opening our café, we discussed table manners and etiquette and came up with the following expectations.

 

 

We also worked on some creative "potato" stories, while we waited patiently for the potatoes to cook.

 

 

After the potatoes were prepared and cooked, we walked into the library to find it looking like this...

 

 

We waited patiently for our table numbers to be called to taste the fresh and delicious potatoes that we had grown.

 

 

Mr. Mallinson and Mrs. Singh served the potatoes with all the fixins.

 

 

 

Mmmmmmm, yum!

Don't worry! This little classroom blog is still up and running. Things just seem to be flying by and our schedule has been jammed packed with so many end of the year events and celebrations. So I'll let the photos do most of the talking.

 

The weather has definitely improved, so we have been taking advantage of the warmer afternoons with some outdoor quiet and buddy reading opportunities.

 

 

Way back in May, our school celebrated our version of Rodeo Days which coincided with our local Coverdale Rodeo.

Some of our school rodeo events included the Rootbeer Chug,

and the Marshmellow Stuff.

 



 

While all these fun events were going on, some of us managed to relax in our western gear.

and the Bubble Gum Blowing Contest.

One of our recent Math units focused on statistics and probability. We constructed and interpreted concrete graphs and pictographs to solve problems.

I "Mustache" You A Questions

 

 

 Our most recent Math study focused on measurement. Here we are completing a measurement activity which included measuring our head, hands, legs and feet with our favourite unit of measurement.

 

 

That's a quick look at just a few of the things we have done over the last month. Unfortunately, I was unable to take any photos of our school's Sports Day. I would love it if someone would be willing to share their photos and post them on our blog.

 

Don't forget that tomorrow is our Parent and Volunteer Appreciation Tea.

We hope to see all of you there to say "Thank You" and show our appreciation for all your help and hard work this year.

Friend 2 Friend Presentation

These last two days of sunshine have been amazing and apparently it is supposed to continue on for the rest of the week. YAY! We've definitely taken advantage of the sunshine and spent some extra time outdoors during our gym block.

 

Personal Fitness

 

We are also right smack dab in the middle of our personal fitness unit for physical education. We are working on improving our stamina during our personal fitness centre rotations. Here are a few pictures that show some of our personal fitness activities. 

 

Friend 2 Friend Presentation



Today we were very lucky to have a few special visitors from the Friend 2 Friend Social Learning Society. The program they presented today in class works to foster understanding, acceptance and empathy between individuals with autism and their peers, while introducing prosocial communication strategies to enhance peer social relations and reduce bullying. The students watched a short video presentation, learned the seven friendship tips, and finally role-played with some puppets to demonstrate their learning and understanding. The presentation was extremely engaging and fun. We will definitely be doing some follow- up activities over the next month.  

 

Spelling

Don't forget that Friday is a Professional Development Day, therefore students will not be in class. Our weekly spelling quiz will take place on Thursday and we are focusing on the r-controlled spelling pattern - or and -ore. Our spelling lists are now available on spellingcity.com/singha. Spelling city is a great opportunity to practice your weekly words in a fun and engaging way.
