Breakfast With Santa and Pajama Day

Breakfast with Santa was a huge success. A great big thank you to all the PAC members and the rest of the parents for organizing such a great event. The kids loved every minute of it!

Elf Applications And A Little Fa La La

Today we performed "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" at our school's Christmas concert. We did a great job! Among all of our Christmas concert excitement, it also snowed a ton the entire day. We could help but take a class photo with all the snow in the background. Here we are smiling and posing politely for the camera.

Speaking of concerts and singing...
Here are some adorable Christmas carolers we made over the past week to inspire us while we practiced for this special night.

 

 

In other news, Santa sent us an urgent memo! It seems that he may need some back-up elves to help him up in the North Pole. You know, just in case one of his regular elves comes down with the flu. Of course we all wanted to apply for the job. Here are a few of our elf job applications.

 

Amy applied to be a baker elf. Her previous experience includes cooking with her Mom and she would also like to learn a little more about measuring. I think Amy would make a great baker elf. Her desired pay is marshmallows. I am sure the North Pole has plenty of those.

 

 

Lucia applied to be a stable elf. She has a lot of experience with horses. She enjoys feeding and riding horses and reindeer are similar to horses so she feels she would be perfect for the job. I think so too! She would love to be payed with sour keys! Yum!

 

Puneet applied to be an elf spy. The kind that checks up on children to see if they are being naughty or nice. Her previous experience includes spying on her brother. Apparently she is also great at playing pranks on her brother as well. I am positive that the North Pole needs someone like you, Puneet! Puneet's desired pay is nothing. She'll just do it for free!

 

 

I guess we'll just have to wait and see if any of Santa's elves come down with the flu or anything else.

 

I hope the snow lasts overnight and does not get washed away. We did not get a chance to enjoy it today. Maybe tomorrow.

Oh No! Someone touched the Elf!

I am sure you probably already heard but last Friday we walked into our classroom and.....GASP! No Elf! In her place was a note from Santa. It seems she lost her magic because someone had touched  her. Here is the note that Santa left.

 

Luckily, Santa Claus happen to be stopping by later that day for some photos. He was kind enough to take a little extra time out of his busy schedule and talk to the class about what had happened. He also gave us a small container of "magic elf dust". We sprinkled the "magic elf dust" on Angelina the Elf and she was as good as new.

Santa's Stuck Puppet Shows

Yesterday we created a short skit based on the story Santa's Stuck. We were having so much fun performing for the kindies as well as the students in Mr. Mallinson's class that I completely forgot to take any photos. Arggghhh! They were so cute! Today we created some adorable popsicle puppets for each of the characters in the story to help us practice retelling. Once again super cute! This time however, I had my camera ready to capture a few shots.

 

 

 

This next little cutie is very soft spoken and shy. However, she was so excited about performing this puppet show. She even presented it to a few of our lovely grade 6 students. I was so proud of her! I managed to record her but unfortunately the sound quality is not the greatest. I guess I just might have to ask Santa or Mr.Singh for a new camera with better recording quality this Christmas. I am still posting it because she is seriously too cute!

Pete the Cat Saves Christmas

I just realized that I did not post any photos of our Christmas desk decorating activity last week. Here's a little photo display...

 

When we finished decorating our desks, we began a fun Pete the Cat Saves Christmas activity booklet. If you have not had a chance to read any Pete the Cat books, you need to run out to our public library immediately and sign one out. I think Pete the Cat might just be one of our favourite series of books. Here is a short video link to Pete the Cat Saves Christmas.

 

 

 

Our love for Pete the Cat has also inspired our Pete the Cat math themed centres focusing on learning to read a write number words.

 

We've also been working on our holiday themed writing skills over the last two weeks. We have been using the "someone, wanted, but, so, finally" graphic organizer to help the students sequence the steps to write an effective paragraph. Here are a few examples of our work:

 

 

The amount of detail in each of the paragraphs varies depending on the student's grade level as well as their abilities. A few of the students had the opportunity to publish their paragraphs on our blog. You can check them out here.

Once there were two funny  bears hoo wanted to decorat a tree. But they got tanguled up in lights. So they asked brown bear for help. Finally they got untanguled and made the tree and became freinds.

Santa wanted to deliver toys. But his sleigh broke down. So he asked a friend for help. Finally he deliverd the toys to all the good children.

No Luck.... Santa's Stuck

Fifteen days until Christmas!!! Seriously? This month is just flying by. We have two weeks of school left until our break and we are definitely into the full swing of Christmas. The lights are up throughout the classroom, desks have been decorated, we have read at least 2 or more Christmas themed picture books a day, and a little elf seems to be popping up in our classroom daily.

One of the many stories we read today was called Santa's Stuck by Rhonda Gowler Greene. In this story, Santa has eaten too many treats and when he tries to leave a home after enjoying milk, cookies, and more, he gets stuck in the chimney. The reindeer on the roof try to pull him up, but no luck -  Santa’s stuck. He calls for help and awakens the dog. The dog pushes Santa’s bottom, while the reindeer pull, but no luck - Santa’s stuck. The cat and her kittens come to help and push, but no luck -  Santa is still stuck. It takes a mouse and a toy bulldozer to get the job done.



The students loved the story and thought it would be a great idea to create a play based on this story. Tomorrow we will be bringing out our dramatic acting skills and perform the story, first to each other and maybe, just maybe, to some of the other classes. I will definitely be posting some photos of their work.

A Little Elf Stopped By...

Did you know that our class has it's own elf? She showed up yesterday above our whiteboard along with a story book. This morning we walked in to find her buddy reading with Fin. I wonder where she will be tomorrow?

 

 

We decided on the Christmas concert song that we will be performing this year. We'll be singing "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth". We've been very busy learning the lyrics as well as some fancy footwork the last two days. With all this Christmas spirit in the air, we decided to write our letters to Santa. We displayed them in the hallway for everyone, including Santa, to see!

Lucia had a lot to tell Santa. Her letter turned out to be 3 pages long. Wow!

Just a quick update....

This post is going to be short and sweet...

 

It seems that some of Santa's elves were busy decorating the classroom over the weekend. The students walked in this morning to find Christmas lights hanging everywhere. Hmmmmm!!?? I wonder what they'll be up to next? I guess we'll just have to keep our eyes and ears open to see what other Christmas fun they might bring to the room during the month of December.

 

Today we learned about the long e vowel sound. Some of the long e vowel patterns we focused on today were:

 

ea = peach     ey = key     ee = teeth     i = ski

tricky pattern ei = theif

 

Once again, we created a list of words with the long e vowel sound and then placed them under the appropriate pattern.

 

Lastly, we will be celebrating 50 days of school this week. We'll be spending the week engaged in a number of hand-on activities centered around the number 50 as well as many 1950's inspired writing and art activities. On Friday, we'll wrap-up our fifties celebration with a costume dress-up day. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed-up in rolled jeans, t-shirts, and poodle skirts or just in the colours pink and blue. We will be sure to have a BLAST!
